Cost Genie Software LLC was created out of industry necessity. CEO Kenny Arone found that many restaurants in the 1990s were not taking inventory or monitoring food costs. Kenny set out to provide solution to the problem. He partnered with Mark Kerr and developed Cost Genie.

Originally, Cost Genie started as an inventory program and has since transitioned into a full-service product with multiple modules and features. While the software was designed specifically for the independent restaurant owner/operator, several large well-known eateries, franchises, hotels and casinos have used Cost Genie to lower their food costs, including Black Angus, Red Lion Hotels, Farmer Boys and more.

Cost Genie’s impressive functionality and client results captured the attention of publisher Pearson Prentice Hall, which bundled Cost Genie 3.5 Menu Costing Program (Student Version) with its culinary student textbooks.

Today, Cost Genie is a leader in food costing for restaurants and food service businesses.

Kenny Arone Cost GenieKen Arone leverages over 30 years of restaurant management experience in his roles as restaurant consultant and CEO of Cost Genie Food Costing Software. Ken is highly
knowledgeable in all aspects of restaurant operations.

Early in his career, Ken served as Director of Operations for the well-known Carlos O’Briens restaurant where he supervised three locations whose annual sales exceeded $8 Million at the time.

Since then, the food and beverage industry veteran has consulted with several independent restaurants, established as well as start-up operations.

Specializing in business development, Ken is focused on two things: driving sales and reducing
costs. He evaluates current systems and procedures, identifies any problems and teaches
restaurateurs how to improve and implement corrective actions.

In 2000, Ken packaged his food costing expertise into a much-needed industry product– – Cost
Genie Menu Costing Software. The innovative product changes how restaurant owners cost out
their menus, recipes and inventory.

In his spare time, the Army veteran volunteers as a SCORE mentor, providing business
mentorship to aspiring restaurateurs.


Mark D. Kerr, a certified Filemaker developer and software design specialist extraordinaire is co-owner of Cost Genie Software LLC. He designed and programmed the Cost Genie Menu Costing software.

His career began in commercial printing where he accidentally discovered Filemaker Pro and his new passion. Since 1999, he’s been writing solutions to address the needs of users in many industries, including printing, food service, medical billing, wholesale distribution, legal practice and more.

Mark is also the principal of Discovery Reef Design & Consulting. His ability to anticipate the needs of the end user and provide creative solutions have earned the loyalty of those who know and work with him.
